Recruiting in 2014 Look Out for These Changes (Part 1) - Spark Hire

Recruiting in 2014 Look Out for ansicht Changes (Part 1) - Spark HireWith the close of 2013, everyone is making their predictions for 2014 in terms of weather, sports and politics. Well, the recruiting industry is no different. As you and other recruiters face 2014, there are many changes you need to make in order to recruit 2014 job candidates. These job seekers need to feel like theyre important, that they could be a vital contributor to the business and that youre the best to work for in the industry. As ere.net puts it, you need to attract candidates versus recruiting in 2014. Fortunately, they provide a few suggestions as to how you can stay on top of the 2014 recruiting trends.Marketing and Company BrandThis new year, dont think of recruiting as recruiting. Rather, consider it all marketing. This may require you to shift your focus and your techniques, but the trade off will be worth it. Change your pitch, verbiage and content to language that resonates with your target recruit, suggests ere.net.Youll also need to build your company brand. Invest time and resources into social media, blogs and profiles on career and job sites like Spark Hire. Youll not only receive more exposure, but youll be able to show a more personal side to your business, thereby building the company brand. More importantly, youll create a channel in which you can dialogue with prospective job candidates, an enticing factor as they consider their options and open job opportunities.Big DataWeve covered this before at Spark Hire, and youll find that in 2014, more and more recruiters will be depending on big data, according to ere.net. Why? Because big data answers the big questions. Gather data on your current employees, and look for trends. You may notice that a certain demographic have stayed with the company longer or that a specific character trait is necessary to longevity and success within your company. Once you determine ansicht trends, youll be able to make better hiring decisi ons.And once youve found these job candidates, its important to invest in them as new hires and long-term employees. With that, training during the first few weeks is vital. As they make contributions to the team, give them praise and a pat on the back. Finally, rerecruit them by providing them with the best offers, i.e. promotions, pay increases and a sense that theyre making a big impact right where they are. Part of recruiting is keeping your top talent from moving to your competition. As you can see, 2014 is all about job candidates and their experience. The next two trends, which well cover soon, are no different stay tunedWhat do you think of these predicted recruiting changes? How to stop office gossip especially when youre the target

How to stop geschftszimmer gossip especially when youre the targetHow to stop office gossip - especially when youre the targetOffice gossip is an inevitable temptation in every workplace. A 2007 report found that nearly two-thirds of employees gossip about their companies. In some cases, its a harmless way to spice up a day with anecdotes. But you know it can get hurtful if youve ever been the target when you start entering rooms and everyone stops talking, or when you pull back from friendly interactions with someone because of some gossip you heard about them.Negative gossip like that can irreparably break down team dynamics and createfar-reaching consequences for companies who make decisions based on rumors or in-crowd dynamics.Beyond wounding peoples feelings, gossip hurts businesses. If youre a manager or executive who starts to believe gossip, youre making decisions based on- incomplete at best, or at worse, wildly false- information. Why we gossip even though it hurts our tea msThe first step to conquering it is understandingwhy we do it. A Harvard Business Review article on the subject said that office gossip boils down to a lack of trust and efficacy. Technology can exacerbate ansicht symptoms of mistrust and make it easier for us to gossip through instant messaging platforms. You can see why people depend on them For those of us who dont trust formal channels of information, our private Slack messages to one another may feel like a more valued source of information. And according to HBR, engaging in gossip can offer a tempting emotional release when youre frustrated about a social hierarchy and afraid to address it directly Can you believe what the boss said? If youre in a workplace that doesnt let you speak freely, office gossip can be a satisfying- although not always healthyway- to address interpersonal conflicts I overheard your disagreement and I totally agreeBut just because these gossipy behaviors are understandable, it doesnt mean that theyre acceptable. While they may make us feel better in the short-term, they hurt our relationships with each other and our companies over time. How to stop negative gossipSome rumors are harmless to your career and the best course of action is to not waste energy and just let thoseblow over. People will find something else to gossip about soon enough. But if you find yourself in a situation where people are negatively gossiping about your reputation or that of a colleague, you can be the bystander who steps in and defuses the situation. The goal is to pass that good karma forward you want to model the behavior youd want to see in others if you were the person being gossiped about. Here are some useful techniques to stop gossip and staying likable.1. Dismiss the gossip and change the subjectGossips usually want an appreciative audience they love having the social currency of sharing dirt about others. A quick way to shut them down is to devalue that currency. You can stop gossipdirectly by ch anging the subject with a brisk, maybe she was having a bad day. Anyways, a funnier thing I learned2. Question the gossipMost gossip is not exactly rigorously fact-checked. It often consists of half-truths or things so apparently scandalous that no one actually checks them out with the person being gossiped about. Even if its true, its usually lacking context. Additionally, sometimes the gossip is started - and enforced - by someone with an axe to grind against an office frenemy. All of these techniques serve the gossipers goal to establish him or herself as the moral arbiter of office behavior - and to distract from his own behavior by spotlighting someone elses. But it can be uncomfortable to hear, or to be complicit in wrecking someone elses reputation. So you can stop it indirectlyby emphasizing the positive aspects about that person, as Victor Lipman, theauthor of The Type B Manageradvises. This can mean reminding your colleagues that they could be overreacting and telling the m, That doesnt sound like the Jerry I know. He was great in the conference last month. Its a subtle but effective way to put gossip in wider perspective, providing the context thats frequently lost.3. If youre the target, remember that it may not actually about youGossip is rarely about the target. Instead, its usually about the gossiper, and that persons need for attention.Laura Huxley named her 1960s self-help best-seller for an anecdote she heard about how people comforted each other in air-raid shelters You are not the target. Its a helpful thought when youre under siege or just feeling like you are. What that means is that even in an office context, gossip comes from many different sources and its often, paradoxically not personal. For instance, companies that are near mass layoffs are usually plagued by gossip and toxic cultural practices. Gossipers, in that case, tend to be people who feel that their personal stelle is precarious and want to blame someone else for it, or make someone elses position as precarious as their own.Or, when the company is not in crisis, the gossiper could be a person who feels their career is not going well, and in their personal state of pain, they want to believe someone else is to blame for their troubles, or see someone else as worse off than them. They appoint themselves the hall monitor - sending direct messages to coworkers or saying mean things behind peoples backs - as a position of false power, to make up for their feeling of powerlessness.Gossipers can also be people who feel theyre not well-liked, and so their response is to complain and gossip about others in the hopes of creating an alliance that will protect them. People are more bonded by negative views, after all, than they are by positive ones.In any of these cases, its important to put even the most toxic gossip in context and remember that its about someone elses weakness and insecurity. That doesnt mean it doesnt cause harm it does. Its just that the per son is thinking about themselves more than theyre thinking about you.3. How to address gossipif youre the subject of itWhen youre clear about the source of why people are gossiping, you can address it directly with wry humor, as executive coach Peggy Klaus did. When she was promoted at her company, she heard gossip from subordinates that she didnt have enough technical skills for the job.She got over her anfangsbuchstabe reaction of wanting to be defensive and addressed each of her teams in conversational tones about the issue. Ive heard a lot of other things about mebut since there are men in the room it wouldnt be polite to repeat them, Klaus told them, drawing laughs. Then she got serious Im not going anywhere. If you have any questions about that, come see me.Also keep in mind that the gossiper may just be a person whos negative about everything, and you got caught in the crossfire. The Harvard Business Review has good ideas on how to address that.4. Take gossip out of the shadow sOverall, the long-term way to stop gossip is to promote an office of open communication where people can address conflicts without gossiping about them. This usually takes cooperation from managers if leaders are resistant to ideas or react badly to new information, employees will follow suit and suppress information, creating backchannels of unregulated information that can become toxic. That means getting to the bottom of gossip and squashing rumors before they blow up. If youre a manager with an employee who is a repeat gossip offender, youll need to confront that employee directly.Inc magazine suggests holding a one-on-one with your repeat offender and telling them that if they hear any rumors, they should come to you first. That way it builds trust that you should be the primary source of information-sharing.The truth is that gossipers are usually looking for easy targets, and its important to make sure you dont look like one. How to do that have known defenders. If you dont kn ow exactly who is gossiping about you and for what reasons, you may need to recruit colleagues who would know toadvocate on your behalf. Your advocates can spread truth and set the record straight with others. This is another reason why its always important to build allies in the workplace at every level.

How to Figure out What You Want to Be When You Grow Up

How to Figure out What You Want to Be When You Grow UpHow to Figure out What You Want to Be When You Grow UpHow to Figure out What You Want to Be When You Grow UpWhat welches your childhood dream?A recent Forbes article asked kids what to be when they grow up. The imaginative responses ranged from a dinosaur to a superhero to a princess and my personal favorite taller. In all that amusement and wonder over how young minds work, one bit gave me pause. It was this chart right hereThere it was, number two and three on the list I dont know. How interesting, I thought, that children have no trouble admitting what so many of adults wont that they have no idea what they want to be when they grow up. Perhaps as we get older, there comes a point when it is no longer OK to elend know. It works out just fine for those of us who naturally select a path of interest that guides them to a fulfilling best-fit career. But what about the rest of us?This dilemma can be particularly difficult for profes sionals who have followed an education and a career track towards a reliable job, just to discover that it brings them no joy and does not align with their temperament or natural talents.I know quite a few professionals who studied programming in college because it was the hot field. By senior year, it was clear that they didnt like it. They thought they had gone too far to change course with student debt and graduation looming so they got jobs as programmers. As I see it, they are begrudgingly employed. If that sounds like you, you are in good company. According to Gallup, over 67 percent of the American workforce is either not engaged or actively disengaged at work. What can you do to bring that spark back? Short of walking up to your boss right now and quitting, I encourage you to reflect on a possible career change and whats possible for you in your next professional opportunity. Here are some questions to guide the career change process.1. What are your core skills and talents? When considering skills and talents, it is critical to think outside your job description and industry. You are not trying to write a wanted ad Go beyond what you can do (reconcile cash accounts, answer the phone) and identify your underlying abilities. Are you amazing at diffusing tense situations with irate customers by actively looking for a win-win solution? Can you put small details together into a big picture that tells a story and highlights patterns? Do you naturally and easily inspire the team to make that last bit of effort when everyone is discouraged and tired? Some of us have a difficult time seeing talents and superpowers inside ourselves, and that can make thinking about a career change seem impossible. If that is the case for you, ask people you trust what they think you are great at. You may also consider taking an assessment like StrengthsFinder to identify your themes of talent.2. What were your childhood passions and dreams?Think back to when you were young. Before you were limited by what was rational and practical, you had a dream. What was it?Now, you may come back with a dream of wearing dinosaur costumes in Japanese monster movies or an administrative assistant. Reflect on what those meant to you as a child. Did you connect to the fun of creating make-believe worlds? Your desire to help others? A flair for showmanship and drama? What is inside this package of a childhood dream that reflects who you are?A way to clarify your thinking is by completing this sentence As a child, I wanted to be someone who Perhaps you wanted to be someone who puts a smile on other peoples faces. Think about the impact you want to make whether in a technical field or in the lives of others.3. Who in your possible field intrigues you? After you have identified your talents and strengths, and have connected to the core of who you want to be, chances are a few possible career paths are standing out for you. Before you enroll in a training course or dramatically st art looking for a new career, do your due diligence. My rule of thumb is spend time before you spend money. Dig through your personal network and connect with at least five people who work in that field. Set up phone calls or face-to-face meetings, and get their thoughts on what their professional lives are like. How did they get to their current position? What advice do they have for the younger version of themselves? What do they love about their jobs, and what is their least favorite thing? What challenges should someone like you expect on the path, and what is the best way to deal with those challenges? What pay can you count on in the beginning?Your goal is to play detective and pick up on the small details that Google wont mention to you.Dont limit yourself to just one or two conversations with your future on the line, you want to benefit from as many perspectives as possible. If what you learn is exciting and a little terrifying, you have some good early signs to keep investi gating that direction. If you discover that the real-life version of the intriguing career is nothing like the brochure and you have a difficult time getting excited about it switch your focus.4. Can you map out at least 5 ways to get there? In the early stages of the career change discovery process, it is best to keep your judgments out of your thinking. Sure, your logical mind might pipe in with all sorts of helpful tips, such as But you dont have the degree for this or You could never break into that field or You are too old to start this. Do your best to ignore it for the time being. There will be a time for the feasibility analysis, but that time is not in the beginning.Challenge yourself to imagine at least five ways (more is better) of how you could find yourself working in your field of interest. The scenarios could range from totally logical to far-fetched. What you want is many possibilities. They may not play out exactly as you imagine, but I want for you to see that ther e are multiple ways to get what you want.5. What is the smallest next step you could take in the direction that is calling to you? With your mind and imagination primed, you are ready for your next step in a possible career change. In my experience, it is best to make it small. There are people who manage to close the gap in a single leap, but for most of us change happens gradually. So, what is the smallest action you could take today to get closer to what you want?It does not have to be involved, expensive or dramatic. Perhaps you love flowers and want to be someone who puts a smile on other peoples faces. How about picking up a weekend shift at a local florists shop, or volunteering to do flower arrangements for a friends baby shower? Or maybe you are pulled towards writing more, and your next step is to launch a blog. Do you think that being a yoga teacher is your calling? How about making a commitment to go to at least four yoga classes next week?In closing, remember that these steps are just the beginnings of a possible new path and career change for you. Try to focus on what you truly want. Follow your core build of temperament and talents. That is the key to creating a life thats sustainable and satisfying. Stay open to possibility, and let your journey evolve. It is OK to not know where this road will take you the commitment of walking a few steps every day is enough.Which brings me to my closing point no matter what anyone tells you, a dream job does not equal easy work with no challenges. In my experience, the reason you had not followed this path in the first place is because it is difficult. Paraphrasing Seth Godin, the difficulty of the path is precisely the reason why those who succeed are valued and rewarded. Check your commitment and grit before you uproot your life.Would you like a few resources to guide your discovery and light your way? 6 Tips for Hiring in Emerging Fields

6 Tips for Hiring in Emerging Fields 6 Tips for Hiring in Emerging Fields As technology and society evolve, careers come and go. Fewer jobs exist today in fields such as print journalism or domestic manufacturing compared to 10 years ago. At the same time there has been an explosion in social media, data science, user experience design, sustainability and mobile application development. How do you hire for openings in new fields when it̢۪s unlikely that a candidate has more than a few years of direct experience, if any at all? Here are six factors to consider as you look at filling your next opening for a social media analytics manager, an optimization scientist or some other job that didn̢۪t exist just a few years ago. 1. Be flexible about requirements. Give up looking for the unicorn, and be willing to allow candidates to develop skills on the job. Jike Chong, head of data science at Simply Hired, identified three specific skills (data analysis, algorithm design, and hypothesis forming) that employees in his department need to have in order to perform well on the job. He says that in graduate school the tendency is to focus on one or two of the three skills. Chong̢۪s candidates must be very strong in at least one of the three skill sets. In the interview he gauges a candidate̢۪s learning ability and level of interest in acquiring the remaining skills. Maintaining flexibility by evaluating candidates̢۪ aptitude, interests, and transferable skills as well as proven ability allows you to bring capable employees onboard faster. 2. Interview for passion. Many new fields are so specialized that there are few people who hold jobs in them. Those who are most passionate about fields such as sustainability or user experience connect with their global community of peers online by reading blogs and topic-specific books and publications. Ask candidates how they stay current with trends. In fast-evolving fields, online reading is evidence of their passion and a necessity to stay on top of new developments. Also check to see if a candidate maintains a blog or an active presence on an industry-related forum. 3. Evaluate problem-solving ability. New fields require employees to do things that have never been done before. Whether you̢۪re hiring a new grad or someone with experience, probe for problem-solving abilities by asking about past projects in which they had to do something new and how they went about doing it. Also provide hypothetical scenarios based on your company̢۪s unique problems to get a sense of how they will deal with challenges specific to the field. 4. Be ready to move quickly. In some locations candidates with specific skills are in high demand with multiple employers competing for their attention. If you sense that a top candidate is about to accept another job, be willing to take a risk and prepare an offer quickly. If the candidate meets most of your criteria but not all, weigh the value of filling the position sooner rather than later. 5. Consider short-term contracts or internships. It can be hard to know what the impact of a new hire will be until someone is actually on the job. Hiring interns and contractors is a great way for your company to get the help it needs in a new field while evaluating if the person is right for a permanent role. Simply Hired̢۪s 2013 data intern program resulted in several hires. Interns who develop the appropriate skills, demonstrate interest and show a willingness to go the extra mile are your future star employees. 6. Develop relationships with universities. If you don̢۪t have a college recruiting program, now is the time to start. University undergraduate, graduate and continuing education programs are great sources of candidates in new and emerging fields. Consider expanding your relationship beyond just recruiting. Professors are always looking for real-world scenarios to use in their coursework. Job descriptions for new roles often are created from imagination. Instead of searching for the perfect candidate that likely does not exist, find enthusiastic candidates who show a willingness to grow into the role after they are hired. As we mentioned last week, consider the whole candidate. An individual worker is the sum of their work experience and skills, education, interests, life experiences and past industry and company type. Just like the employees in emerging fields who will be solving new problems, recruiters can get creative in embracing the challenge of finding candidates to fill newly-created roles. Over the next several months we̢۪ll be sharing best learnings and best practices on how to adapt and thrive in this new era of changing careers. How to Become an Accountant

How to Become an Accountant How to Become an Accountant Are you exploring a career transition and have a head for numbers? Or are you a student considering the accounting degree track? You might even be an accounts payable clerk looking to move up the corporate ladder. Though you may not yet know exactly how to become an accountant, breaking into the field is a very achievable goal. Talented accountants are in high demand and can command lucrative salaries, according to the Accounting Finance Salary Guide. However, it̢۪s important to understand that embarking on this career path takes significant time, experience and planning. If you̢۪re wondering how to become an accountant, the following six steps can help you chart your course. 1. Identify your goals There̢۪s a multitude of doors to choose from when planning your accounting career. For example, you might want to work as a public accountant with your own practice, a staff accountant at a law firm or an internal auditor at a nonprofit organization. When weighing these options, take the time to think about your interests and passions, as well as your short- and long-term goals. Use our Salary Guide to research the many different accounting jobs available and get an idea of which area you̢۪d like to specialize in. Discuss your plans with a college career counselor, trusted colleagues or experienced financial professionals who can help point you in the right direction. 2. Earn a degree Many employers seek candidates with an undergraduate degree in accounting or a related field. If you already have a bachelor̢۪s degree and are looking to change careers, think about pursuing a post-graduate option such as a master̢۪s degree in accounting or business administration. Do note that if your career path leads you to the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation, the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) recommends pursuing graduate-level courses to obtain the 150 semester hours required to sit for the exam. 3. Choose between public and private accounting Determining whether to work in the public or private sector is a fork in the career path of every aspiring accountant. If you̢۪re interested in providing financial services to clients from an array of industries, the public route could be for you. On the other hand, those who want to work in the accounting department of a company that focuses on a single field may find more satisfaction down the corporate corridor. Your talents are likely to be in high demand regardless of the direction you take. Likewise, both fields are well compensated, though public accountant salaries tend to be slightly higher. Visit our Salary Center to learn more about the going rates for specific roles in your region. USE THE SALARY CALCULATOR 4. Develop skills and experience Employers seek accounting professionals who are adaptable, collaborative and committed to continuous education. They̢۪re also drawn to outstanding communicators with leadership qualities, so set yourself up for success by polishing all of these soft skills. Accountants with technological savvy are also highly sought. Stand out from the pack by having strong knowledge of artificial intelligence, process automation, cloud-based systems, ERPs, and (of course) Excel and QuickBooks. While it can be difficult to gain experience before landing your first entry-level accounting job, it̢۪s not impossible. Students and recent graduates should reach out to professors and guidance counselors about internships. If you̢۪re already in the workforce, ask your employer about opportunities for cross-training or job shadowing. 5. Get certified Earning accounting certifications takes significant time and effort, which shows employers you̢۪re determined and committed to your job. These designations can set you apart from the competition and help you fetch a higher salary. Public accountants should look at becoming a CPA, which has long been seen as the gold standard. Those working in the private sector can gain an edge in the job market with qualifications focused on their specialties. Here are several of the most desirable certifications: Chartered financial analyst (CFA) Certified financial planner (CFP) Chartered global management accountant (CGMA) Certified internal auditor (CIA) Certified information systems auditor (CISA) Certified management accountant (CMA) 6. Find your first job Your initial accounting position can set the tone for the rest of your professional life. Before applying, review and update your goals, interests and the area in which you̢۪d like to specialize to ensure your energies are targeted toward what will bring you the most career satisfaction - and success. How to become an accountant? As you can see, there̢۪s more to becoming an accountant than there may be for other jobs. You need to choose your career path, become educated and certified, develop skills, gain experience and get hired. But the rewards will make it all worthwhile. When it̢۪s time to look for a job, work with an experienced staffing agent who can help you identify quality opportunities. Specialized recruiters can assist in locating roles that dovetail with your resume, and your aspirations and personality, too. Think accounting is the field for you? 5 Tips for Putting Virtual Work Experience on Your Resume

5 Tips for Putting Virtual Work Experience on Your Resume 5 Tips for Putting Virtual Work Experience on Your Resume You’ve gained some work-from-home experience under your belt. As a job seeker, you know that sometimes you need more than one resume to send out to potential employers. So now that you’ve gained some virtual work experience, it’s time to redesign your resume to reflect your remote work! Here are just five tips for putting virtual work experience on your resume- and landing another virtual job! In the Summary While some experts might argue against putting your remote work intentions in the summary, it’s perfectly acceptable to write them there, provided you are applying for positions that are already virtual. After all, if you are applying for a wide variety of jobs, and the very first thing a potential boss of an in-office job sees is that you want to work from home, your job application might get tossed before it’s even read. So be sure that the position you’re applying for is a remote one before submitting your application with that in the summary. In the Skills Section The skills section of your resume is really the place for your previous remote experience to shine! Unlike in the work experience section, where youll list hard-hitting facts and figures about your past accomplishments and accolades received while working remotely, the skills area of your resume is the place to highlight the soft skills that hiring managers are looking for. You can use words like self-manager, highly organized, and strong communicator, all of which are the necessary skills youll need in order to work remotely, no matter what type of work-from-home position youre applying for. In the Job Title Let’s say that youve had freelance writing jobs, penning some articles for a variety of media outlets. On your resume, you can write that your job title was “Freelance Writer.” By including the word freelance, you’re immediately signaling to a prospective boss that you worked from a home office. In the Work Description While you want to ensure that you give complete coverage to your past work accomplishments in the job experience section, you also want to highlight to a prospective boss that these achievements were done all from the cozy comfort of your home office. You can get this info across by using an example that reads something like this: Project Manager Completed two-year-long projects on time and on budget working from a home-based office equipped with high-speed Internet, a business landline, and cutting-edge computer equipment. Social Media Manager Grew the company’s Twitter following by 25,000 new followers, as well as 15,000 new Facebook fans (worked remotely 50 percent of the time). In the Location Another spot to advertise your virtual experience and skills is in the location section of the resume. For example, after your job title, some job seekers will put the city and state where the company is located. But if you worked remotely, you don’t want to write “Accountant. My Living Room, USA.” So if you worked from home on any particular positions, you can write “Accountant. Remote.” That way, a hiring manager will know automatically that you have worked as an accountant in a remote capacity. It’s crucial to highlight your virtual work experience, particularly if you’re looking for a flexible job. By using any combination of the examples above, you’ll impress a potential boss with your success as a remote worker- and hopefully receive an invitation for a job interview! Readers, how do you incorporate your virtual work experience on your resume? Let us know in the comments!

Environmental Scientist lands dream job after resume remake

Environmental Scientist lands dream job after resume remake Environmental Scientist lands dream job after resume remake Environmental Scientist lands dream job after resume remake Diana Greenburg, a Ph.D. environmental scientist, lost her temporary federal job last year. Seeking a permanent position to stabilize her familys finances and advance her career with the federal government, she found keen competition for jobs in her specialty. Living and working in the Midwest, the family was open to a major relocation, perhaps to an offshore U.S. territory. Greenburg’s meticulously detailed resume, adapted from her curriculum vitae, was extremely technical and intended for an audience of academics. This meant her resume was not well targeted to human resources managers and federal hiring managers. In academia, you present a CV rather than a resume, and its comprehensive rather than selective, says Greenburg. Its raw data, and you assume the search committee â€" mostly scientists themselves â€" will pick out whats important. But for federal resumes, you have to analyze your own work history and show whats relevant to the job announcement. Not realizing that the style and substance of her resume were holding her back, Greenburg put in scores of applications for federal jobs and did manage to land a few interviews. But when she met with the hiring people face-to-face, she tended to go into lecture mode regarding her own impressive research, rather than addressing the specific requirements of the job at hand and how her own research could be applied to provide solutions. The turning point Id been unemployed for a year and half, and I wasnt getting offers, says Greenburg. I decided my resume needed an extra push, so I went to Kathryn Troutman for help. Kathryn totally revamped my resume, taking it in a direction I would never have thought of myself. That direction brought clarity to Greenburgs presentation of herself. We worked together to make her resume shorter and more specific, says Troutman. I trimmed down the scientific content and added material about her communications experience and even customer service skills, which I knew the federal folks would be looking for. Greenburg had an Aha! moment. Ive learned from Katherine that your federal resume needs to be a bridge, says Greenburg. You write your resume so HR can understand it and walk it over to the hiring manager. If the bridge isnt written correctly, the resume will never make it to the other side. Troutman asked Greenburg detailed questions about her work, to ensure that her federal application contained all the right keywords to maximize her chances of being selected for an ideal job. Kathryn zeroed in on keywords in the job announcement and elevated those same words in my resume, to let the HR people know that I have the exact skills they’re looking, says Greenburg. For example, in the academic world, job candidates simply list presentations they’ve given, and communication skills are implied. But for federal jobs, those skills must be made explicit in the resume with keywords relating to communications. Greenburg then applied for two more federal jobs in her field, and won interviews for both. To improve her performance in the interviews, she received face-to-face tutoring with Troutman. She learned to shape her answers and comments to the requirements of the specific jobs and the priorities and concerns of the interviewer. Kathryn gave me feedback and practice with scoping out the audience and matching the material to that audience, presenting ideas in a way that nontechnical people will understand, says Greenburg. I learned to organize my accomplishments into 60-second answers to a variety of interview questions. Troutman stuck with Greenburg through the entire federal application process, ensuring that all steps were taken to maximize the likelihood of a job offer. Within months, I landed my dream job, working for the Environmental Protection Agency in Puerto Rico and supporting a mission to steward Americas natural resources. Maybe more importantly, this career move has enabled me to assure my familys stability. In the end, Dianas perseverence and our efforts to retarget the resume made the difference, says Troutman. For Diana, the job she got is the best on the entire planet.
